The shopping centers have been classified by the International Council of Shopping Centres. They have been classified into eight basic types. These include a community center, neighborhood center, fashion center, specialty center, outlet center, super-regional center and a thematic or festival center. When this list was published in 1999, it was made common to all countries. However, later this list was only for the United States and then a separate list was released for the rest of Europe.
A neighborhood center
A neighborhood center is a small-scale shopping mall that specifically serves a local neighborhood. They mostly have a pharmacy or a supermarket as their base. They are also usually laid out in the form of a strip mall. These types of malls have a retail area of approximately 30,000 to 150,000 square feet. They also service a primary area within a 3 mile radius.
A community hall
You could say that a community hall is bigger than a neighborhood centre. It also offers a very wide range of products. They mainly feature two flagship stores that are extremely larger than those of a neighborhood center.
A regional center
A regional mall is a type of mall that is designed in such a way that it can serve a much larger area than a conventional mall. Thus, it is able to offer a much larger retail area and hence can serve many customers at one time.
This is a very large type of mall. It covers an area of over 800,000 square feet and it is gross leasable area.
A fashion center
A fashion mall usually consists of high-end boutiques and clothing stores and these cater to affluent customers or those with access to a higher level of income. They also have a retail area that ranges between 80,000 and 250,000 square feet.
A center of power
A mall is a very large shopping center that has many big-box retailers as anchors. They have a retail area of between 250,000 and 600,000 square feet and they also have a main shopping area of 5 to 10 miles.
These types of malls have a very distinct and unifying theme which is followed by individual stores and also their architecture. They are mainly located in urban areas and receive a large number of tourists.
